It was drawn in 1893 and this reproduction appeared in the 'British Printer' 1894. It measures 28 cms x 22 cms and is mounted.Price £12 ![]() Advert for Winsor & NewtonThis is a most unusual, fascinating and historical advertisement for Winsor and Newton printing inks from 1895. It is remarkable on more than one count. The birds and the hazel branch they are perching on, are exquisitely drawn by H Giacomelli and wood engraved ( I think) by Huyot. Both signatures appear on the images. Giacomelli was a well-known bird artist of the period and Huyot engraved many of his drawings on wood. Huyot died in 1885 so I do not know how this picture came to be used for an advert in 1895. It's possible that it's an earlier advert for their more well known artist colours being re-run for their printing inks. What makes it fascinating, the artistry apart, is that it announces an innovation in the supply of printing inks. Instead of the more usual tins, the inks are now in collapsible tubes which had been in use for some time for their artists colours. The metal tube was invented in 1841 and Winsor and Newton at once saw its potential as a container for their high quality water colour paints. They invented the screw cap for metal tubes so that they could be opened again and again and leave the contents in good condition. A wonderful piece of trivia too! You can think about this next time you clean your teeth!!!! It is appeared in 'The British Printer' magazine for 1895 and is possibly unique because out of several volumes that I acquired from 1895 onwards, this is the only Winsor & Newton advert there is. If you would like a larger version of the image, please feel free to request one. The reduced copy here doesn’t really show it properly. This is a quality print printed on heavy art paper. It is mounted and measures 26 cms x 20.5 cmsPrice £12 ![]() The Model's Rest by Percy Harland FisherThis is a most charming print of a painting by Percy Harland Fisher who lived from 1867-1944. The painting is called 'The model's rest' and depicts a young girl warming her hands in front of a stove, being kept company by her dog and cat. According to the acknowledgement under the picture it appeared in a Victorian children's magazine called 'Little Folks' According to information I found on the Modern Journals Project website, Fisher was born at Dulwich and educated at Dulwich College. He was a member of the Pastel Society and exhibited with them in 1918, Ezra Pound charging him with "a yearn for tinted photography," by which he meant "just the emotional values, and just the aesthetic intensity of the tinted photos shown in the window of any tinting photographer. I do not refer disparagingly to an accurate transcription of natural objects" Judging by other info I found one of his more well-known pictures is called 'Sisters' This print appeared in 'The British Printer' magazine for 1896. It depicts a young red-haired lady with flowing locks and Greek style dress picking what appear to be peonies in a semi-wild garden.I have managed to put together the following brief biography of him from information gleaned elsewhere on the internet. Karl Maria Schuster (1871 - 1953) was a renowned Viennese artist. His main works were primarily of figures, interiors and landscapes. He studied under Julius Berger , Leopold Carl Mueller, J.M. Trenkwald and Sigmund I´Allemand . The artist travelled widely to study - Egypt, America, Holland , Belgium , Switzerland , Germany and the South of France. In WWI he worked as a military painter. From 1928 to 1940 he lived in Carithia. In 1929 he was awarded with Silver Medal of the Vienna Art Union "Genossenschaft der bildenden Künstler ". In 1946 he received the Golden Laurel of the Viennese House of Artists– the Weiner Künstlerhaus , which he had been a member of since1903. The Gallery Makow in Klagenfurt organized a grand memorial exhibition of his work in 1971. The print is from 'The British Printer' magazine for 1898. Most other pictures I have found of Vesta Tilley always show her smoking - I'm sure that was something not considered very ladylike at the time! This is also by way of an advertsiement for Winstone's Inks as all the deatil of the colours used in the print are listed underneath. No clue as to the artist - only that it is 'Copyright'! 27cms x 21cms £10 ![]() Vesta Tilley 1895 - reproduced from a photographGlamour print of Vesta Tilley 1895This print is taken from a photograph by Mr. Alfred Ellis who had premises in Baker St, London and was active 1884-1899.
